APPROACHES IN DESIGN RESEARCH

Summary:

The article expounds the epistemology of design, the objects of research and various approaches in design research. Object-based approaches including: (1) sampling, (2) variables, (3) pattern, (4) knowledge model and (5) data source. Knowledge model can be further detailed in the approaches of: science, humanities (semiotics, history, philosophy, psychology, etc), and esthetics. For the approaches which stem from the data source include the approach on the subjects, objects, users and its environment. Each approach possesses its own methods, e.g. the method in philosophy-based approach (phenomenology, hermeneutics, etc), semiotic approach (text analysis, semantics differential, etc.) and sociology’s approach (ethnography, behaviorism,etc.). Through design research the expected outcomes include the knowledge on the (a) objects, (b) practical application, (c) process and (d) design theory.

SPATIAL STRUCTURE AND MEANING OF JAVANESE LIVING ENVIRONMENT

Summary:

This research observes the spatial characteristics of Javanese living environment. Two areas have been observed, which are: Jeron Beteng and Kota Gege of Yogyakarta Province. The living environment in those areas has been perceived as a cultural product of the inhabitants and structured into some aspects, such as: settlement pattern, housing structure, territorial boundary, public spatial domain and public spatial attributes. From the analysis, it has been concluded that: (a) the transformation of socio-cultural background of Javanese society is very related to the spatial transformation of Javanese living environment; (b) pendopo (entrance shelter) and amben (house-front bench) are important part of Javanese traditional dwelling in accommodating people interaction, and; (c) the tendency to segmenting open space of traditional dwelling into some functional living spaces.

CHINESE EATING CULTURE AND THE CUTLERY DESIGN OF URBAN TIONGHOA COMMUNITY

Summary:

This articles is to outline the relationship between the eating culture and the tableware design as well as the traditional values prevailing in the Chinese community in Indonesia. Through the analysis of the history of Chinese immigrants in Glodok-Jakarta and from the observation of Tionghoa community’s living traditions, it can be inferred that substantial changes have taken place between the dining culture of Chinese community and the Tionghoa Indonesian’s tradition in Indonesia. Despite being remain considered as an activity to tie the family and business partnerships up, the dining, and the design of the hall and tableware in the current community have been changing according to the practicality and space efficiency of modern life and adopting the local traditions. The change including the common use of the western cutlery i.e. spoon, fork and knife aside of the traditional chopsticks.

THE CONTRASTS OF BLUE ON DISPLAY-DESIGN

Summary:

Previous researches have suggested that the use of blue color on a display can increase the effectiveness of interaction between users and the presented interface. Aside of its role to enhance attractiveness—colors do have pivotal roles in ensuring system acceptability and credibility. The present study evaluates the contrast ratio of applied colors and the correctness ratio of reading information on ATM display using feature-search method. Results show that the correctness ratio when reading the presented information correlates significantly to the contrast ratio of color on ATM display. It can be concluded that the contrast ratio of screen colors influences the accuracy and effectiveness of reading information on ATM display.

ENHANCING CREATIVITY IN A GROUP OF ‘INEXPERIENCED’ DESIGNERS

Summary:

Product designers should equip themselves with the creative ability to assess user-object interaction. This study investigates whether the design qualities and creative processes of inexperienced designers (a.k.a. students) can be stimulated through the use of VPE technique. It is assumed that students who apply VPE have better quality of design works and enjoy stimulated creative process than those who do not. Results confirm this assumption, showing that applying VPE may enhance student’s design quality and stimulate their creative process in tackling the presented design problem. Yet, as useful as it is, applying VPE should be in precautionary attention since it focuses only on visuals and thus may be limiting a thorough understanding of a design problem.
