CONSILIENCE: NEW PARADIGM IN ART AND DESIGN HIGHER EDUCATION

Summary:
This article emphasized the need of consilience in all branches of knowledge in higher learning. Engineering based education must be complemented with knowledge in esthetics and humanities. In conjunction, art education must widely benefit the progress of science. This complementary relationship can be observed from the progress of esthetics in relation with the truth concepts upheld by academia norms in which the role of arts is of two functions: (1) as the esthetics experience, (2) as the counterbalance to science-technology rational nature. In this relation Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), in particular the art and design discipline which is built upon higher learning concept, should underlie its civitas academica with a comprehensive conception on science, engineering, esthetics and humanities. Moreover the body of knowledge of creative industries is in essence the consilience of various disciplines in university.

EDUCATION PLAYING SET FOR DYSLEXIC CHILDREN

Summary:
This paper is a note on development of reading tool design for dyslexic children. Dyslexia is a reading dis¬ability suffered commonly by the children. Designing this tool is an effort to combining between the function of playing and education tool to introducing the physical shape of letters, the visual connotation and meanings. This research is based on the multisensory method through visual, audio-kinestetic and tactile aspect. From various materials used for the simulation (e.g. pillowed letters, clay, rope, and button), it has been clarified that the button-pushing type is the most favorite way for the children in learning the shape of particular letters. There¬fore, the authors come up with the ideas to develop the use of buttons in rows and certain colors to be pushed following the letter shapes. The tool is also equipped with the image of animals representing the selected letter. This research has been conducted at Pantara Primary School, Jakarta.

THE SIGNIFICANCE INTERPRETATION OF KERATON KILEN YOGYAKARTA IN THE SULTAN HAMENGKU BUWONO X ERA

Summary:
This research explains the relationship between form and meaning of Keraton Kilen Yogyakarta during the period of Sultan Hamendku Buwono X. The purpose of this research is to bring out the various functions and meanings of kraton, that include not only physical functions but also social, cultural and religious functions.  The interior space of Keraton Kilen is physically organized according to the consideration of harmony be¬tween visual beauty and mental-physical needs. The various furniture and ornaments, the formal or grouping organization, spatial consideration, simple shape of geometric space, open or close space, which all show their roles, ranks and status of kesultanan as the provider of peace and protection. The interior space of Keraton Kilen represents the concept of the relation¬ship between Sultan and God (vertical relationship), and Sultan and his social environment (horizontal relation).

STUDY ON VISUAL ELEMENTS OF THE FASHION ASPECTS OF HARAJUKU STYLE IN INDONESIA

Summary:
Harajuku identity is one the street styles in Japan which its popularity has gone spread to Indonesia. Emergence of this style is the ground of expression of rebellious idea against the consumerism and the conventional life of modern society. The Harajuku influence in fashion is identified by the presence of unconventional and promiscuous outfits, excessive accessories and the senseless style and make-up. This study is aimed to identify how far and of Harajuku style to the teen generation of Indonesia. The study was carried by distributing questionnaires to respondents, who adopts this style, regarding their motivation in appearance and the visual analysis based on the style, make-up, style philosophy, and other aspects. The outcome showed the harajuku-influenced teens in Indonesia do not go as far as the Japanese youngsters do. They simply attempt to imitate their appearance yet remains within the prevailing social norms and their purchasing abilities.

CAR DESIGN AND URBAN LIFESTYLE IN INDONESIA.

Summary:
The urban’s modern life style has significantly contributed to the design characters of the Indonesian best selling cars. To anticipate the market that always in favor of changes and novel features, the car manufacturers rely on 4 design change categories i,e, (1) minor alteration on color, (2) Face lift – the change of front look, (3) major modification including the car body, (4) change on the design variants, (5) total revamp of the car model including its engineering capabilities. In this brief review of the car market progress, the Indonesian urban people have their own characteristics: (1) desire on the new addition is simply for appearance, (2) tendency to select the car as investment goods. The car design progress in Indonesia therefore should be able to offer novelties. Adapting these new ideas the consumers are encouraged to raise new expectations.
