This paper summarizes the role of posters as the propaganda media during the Indonesian revolution period 1945-1948 through an history approach. Primary data to support this work was acquired by direct interviews with the art history figures of the period, i.e.: Affandi, S. Sudjojono, Surono, dan Srihadi Soedarsono. Analysis over the interviews indicate the two main role of the poster design of independence struggle of the revolution war era: (1) to deliver message to international awareness on the reality of the independence fight, (2) to deliver political aspiration of the people internally. This paper concludes the substantial role of art and design in the Indonesian independence revolution time. The struggle to hold up the declared independence and the nation unity was also significantly supported by the role of independence struggle posters supplied by the figure artists had a great care of their nation.

Editorial cartoon is a regularly appear cartoon column in a newspaper. The aim of this research is to comprehend the public social, cultural and political background during the parliament democracy stint of Indonesia (1950-1957). Focus is on the correlation between the caricatural metaphor and the multi-party political system and the surmounted freedom of speech at that time. History point of view and visual typology are the main approaches of this work. In addition to the concept and editorial cartoon description of the period. This research also analyzes the visual metaphor aspects of 344 cartoon artifacts from 7 newspapers in Jakarta. The analysis indicated that the visual metaphor of editorial cartoon of the period was delivered open and vividly. Each newspaper earnestly attempted to spread its views towards the occurring political events.

This research explored three discrete factors in order to discover possible approaches to the development of bamboo: the contribution of advanced technology and improved treatment methods to improve bamboo’s material performance; the appropriate use of human resources through the application of appropriate technology; and the introduction of improved design to create functional products with a wider potential market. Exploration of the current situation led to an analysis of factors requiring changes in supply, production and distribution methods, and in the design of bamboo products. This article is the first part of two papers. This first part discusses the past and present state of bamboo industries; the second part is more focused to a design project and provides recommendations for the future use of bamboo as a material for industrial products.

The craft works of prayer beads (tasbih) made from wooden material in Kediri is a very promising craft industries. This stems from the fact that the product is made from Garu, Stigi, Sono, Cendana dan Secang woods- the kinds of high quality woods of Asia which have been widely known for their strengths, unique texture and durability. Nevertheless, the design of these industries remains stagnant with single product, the tasbih prayer-bead for years. No significant progress, in the terms of either the increase of productivity nor the product selling values. An attempt has been performed to diverse and develop the current design towards more varieties of daily life items, e.g. hand bag, wood stick container, etc. A SWOT analysis has been applied to initialize the development strategy. The next step is by performing artistic experiments of combining the beads with certain weaving technique up to the furnishing of a prototype as the reference of training for local craftsmen. Compared to the previous market sale, this design improvement effort has significantly raised the product value up to 150-200%.

Salak fruit prices have significantly dropped over past four years and to be more likely headed towards lower price. This has gradually driven the people to slowly start cutting away 7000 hectares smallholder estate and planting other fruits which assumed to have more economic value like banana, cassava, talas, etc.. To avoid the possible land erosion threat and maintain the environmental sustainability, this research group, local society and supported by of non-profit organization and local government bodies have subsequently conducted to exploit and develop the waste of Salak tree branches into craft products. This activity at the same time supports the breeding of startup small-scaled industries in Tasikmalaya, West java. Currently a core small-scaled industry has been established that empowered more than 50 local people to provide stock of salak blade as raw material. This endeavor has been also advocating the public awareness on the importance of plantation sustainability. Products of the salak blade craftworks has begun to show the positive effect on the economy empowerment of the local community
